Despite an incredibly close first half, the boys varsity basketball team pulled away in victory defeating Glenbard West 71-54. Senior Adam Flowers was a key contributor in the Mustangs victory getting a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and shooting 83% at the free throw line.
Flowers reflected on his success and how he was able to achieve his double-double.
“I just really have to thank my teammates for my win tonight, I know there was a few moments in tonight’s game where I was just upset with myself because of a few bad positioning moments but my teammates just kept uplifting me to go out there and together as a team get this victory,” Flowers said.
Flowers then recalled how the team was able to get important defensive stops to help them obtain victory.
“Going into this game we knew it was going to be a one man show which is ultimately why the first half was the score that it was but, after heading to the locker room and talking it over more we decided we will guard him as five players and as a team rather than just one,” Flowers said.
The first half was a highly calibrated defensive show from both teams as the Mustangs were up by six to end the first quarter with the score being 19-13. The second quarter was followed by crucial shots and important defensive stops by the Hilltoppers to cut the Mustangs lead down to one to head into halftime with the score being 29-28.
The second half the Mustangs were fueled up and ready to go start off with an impressive 5-0 run to start the third quarter and a 7-0 run to end the third quarter now up 10 with the score being 50-40 to head into the final quarter. In the final quarter the Hilltoppers defense proved to be no match for the Mustangs offense with three clutch three pointers were hit by senior Sean Day to seal victory for the Mustangs.
Day was another crucial player for the Mustangs scoring 24 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. He reflected on the team’s performance along with Flowers’ performance.
“I think as a team we executed really well, we knew going into this game that this was going to be a big game against a very good team and all of our guys were very well prepared especially for helping me find those important shots that helped us get the win,” Day said. “I feel like Adam had a very well played game today, obviously getting a double-double right after your 1,000 point game is huge and he is definitely the hardest working player on our team and it is definitely shown in games.”
Head coach Zach Miller emphasized the importance that Flowers and Day both played for the team.
“Both of those guys on winning, they aren’t focused on the numbers they have at the end of the game or individual recruiting they are just focused on getting the win for our team,” Miller said. “Obviously these guys have their important moments but they are not afraid to let the other guys on the team have their moments as well and I think ultimately that’s a reflection of how our team as a whole.”
The Mustangs next game took place against the Naperville Central Redhawks at Naperville Central on Dec. 17 followed by their crosstown rivalry game against the DGN Trojans on Dec. 20 at DGN.
