’Scooby’s Hot Dogs’ captivates Downers Grove

Scooby’s Hot Dogs is a restaurant located at 4319 Prince St, Downers Grove that has been open since 1985.

When hearing about the Hall of Fame you expect to hear about a well-known athlete being inducted, but there are many different types of Hall of Fames. On Nov. 15, 2023, local restaurant Scooby’s Hot Dogs became the 150th restaurant inducted into the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame. Best known for their hot dogs and french fries, Scooby’s put themselves on the map and became the go-to restaurant for many hot dog lovers in the area.

The menu featured a lot of wonderful options from hot dogs to Italian beef. I ordered the Chris’ Combo, priced at $14.75, which included a Chicago-style hot dog, a cheese burger, french fries and a drink.

To begin, I tried the hot dog that was topped with pickle, tomato, sport peppers, chopped onion, relish and mustard. The hot dog sat in a soft, warm bun that was coated in poppy seeds. The bitterness from the mustard paired perfectly with the spice from the sport pepper and the saltiness from the pickles and celery salt.

Next was the cheese burger which included many toppings: chopped lettuce, onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo. The char on the burger did not overpower the saltiness coming from the pickles or cheese, and the chopped lettuce and onion added some needed crunch to the burger. The bottom bun became slightly soggy from the ketchup and mayo, but overall, it was a delicious burger.

When looking at the fries, you can tell they were fresh; they were crispy and golden brown, had the potato skin still on them and you could hear them getting fried in the kitchen.

Walking into Scooby’s is like going back in time-black and white checkered tiles line the floors, huge windows and small, white tiles cover the walls and bright light-up signs can be seen inside and out. The sounds of old classics flow throughout the restaurant, rushing into the ears of the customers. Scooby’s captured the vibe and aesthetic of a classic American diner.

Not only was the ambiance of Scooby’s welcoming, but the staff at the restaurant was friendly and made sure my family and I had everything we needed.

Overall, the food, décor and staff make it worth returning to the restaurant. I will definitely be coming back and ordering their famous hot dogs again.
