The next sport that DGS needs

Marty the Mustang will be the Handball team’s biggest supporter.

I was first introduced to Handball in my 6th grade gym class. My gym teacher briefly described the game and its unique rules— I was hooked right away. The game is a perfect mix of basketball, soccer and catch.

While I am the antithesis of athletic, I am enraptured by this strange European sport and you all should be too. In order to make a team, at least 20 students must be interested and a sponsor must commit, so here are a few reasons why you should be the first students in line for the DGS Handball team.

1. Since nobody knows what the sport is, everyone will be equally as bad.

Handball has weird rules, but there is no reason to fret— no one will be able to show you up at the first practice. Learning a brand new sport as a team offers a unique opportunity for group bonding as the team has to grow from nothing together.

2. It is finally a sport that makes sense.

I don’t know about you, but I always get so frustrated when I am playing soccer or basketball, as I always have the urge to utilize the wrong limb. In handball, you can both kick and throw the ball, whichever one makes the most sense in the moment.

3. Trips have the potential to be super cool.

Just think, if the team were to get really good, a trip to Scandinavia wouldn’t be crazy. If the Spanish club can go to Spain, I don’t think it’s out of the question for the team to visit IKEA’s homeland.

Sports are really intimidating to me, so bringing in a brand new sport for our school would be a chance to finally get involved in a low stress environment. I believe that a Handball team is exactly what DGS needs in order to include more students in athletics.
