The boys varsity basketball team won its 11th straight game on Feb. 7, defeating Hinsdale Central 72–64 in a back-and-forth matchup that featured nine lead changes.
Senior Adam Flowers led the team with 30 points with 20 of those points coming in the fourth quarter.
“I stayed aggressive and could feel the defense wearing down in the fourth quarter. Once we executed the little things, I knew it was my time and everything started to fall into place,” Flowers said. “The biggest thing was just trusting the offense rather than rushing it, which ultimately is why we got the victory.”
Trailing 38-41 entering the fourth quarter, the Mustangs went on an 11–0 run that flipped momentum and gave them control of the game. The Mustangs scored 34 points in the fourth quarter shooting 71% from inside the three point line along with shooting 80% outside.
The Mustangs started the game by going on an 8-0 run; however, because of the Red Devils’ strong second quarter, they were trailing 23-27 at halftime. The Mustangs came into the third quarter scoring 17 points with eight points coming off of five offensive rebounds, but it was the fourth quarter that really changed the game.
The Mustangs’ fourth-quarter impact was fueled by ball movement and rebounding, finishing with 18 assists on 25 made baskets and collecting 32 rebounds as a team. Senior Linas Kasperiunas led the Mustangs on the glass with nine rebounds, while the Mustangs recorded six blocks defensively.
Boys varsity basketball head coach Zach Miller shared his thoughts on Flowers’ performance.
“That’s what great players are supposed to do, and Adam stepped up and delivered when we needed him most,” Miller said. “Adam carried us in big moments, but that was a total team effort. We got huge rebounds, timely shots and a spark off the bench when it mattered most and everybody made winning plays down the stretch.”
Senior Sean Day led the Mustangs with six assists, and scoring in double figures, helping keep the offense flowing down the stretch.
“My job is to get my guys involved, and tonight it was clearly Adam’s game. I trusted him completely and just focused on getting him the ball and letting him go to work,” Day said.
Sophomores Kabreel Thomas and Gavin Garst also helped contribute offensively scoring in double figures helping seal the win.
The Mustangs will look to extend their winning streak when they face Plainfield East at home on Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
