The DGS girls varsity basketball team pummeled in a recent home game against the Naperville North Huskies on Jan. 21 falling 20-60.
In the second quarter the Mustangs were down 6-17 and after an intentional foul committed by senior Jakylah Thomas, the Huskies then went on a 28 point run with the Mustangs now trailing 6-39 to head into halftime. The second half was not much different with the Mustangs trailing 12-49 in the third and then ultimately being defeated to end the game.
Head girls basketball coach Lyndsie Long reflected on the game.
“Naperville North is a solid, athletic team with shooters and their defense caused us problems,” Long said. “We battled defensively, but turnovers and rebounding hurt us. At halftime I told them to play hard and I thought our intensity and defense went a lot better in the second half, and we will keep working on those areas in our practice as we head into tougher games.”
Turnovers were a crucial part of the Mustangs defeat as they had collected a total of 27 turnovers to end the game. The Mustangs were also out rebounded with the Mustangs only managing to grab 13 rebounds while the Huskies managed to capture 20.
Freshman Molly Mihalik led the team’s scoring with six points, grabbing two rebounds and a steal.
“We have to show up to every game with energy and a winning mindset,” Mihalik said. “It’s about lifting each other up with positive reinforcement and moving better without the ball. If we improve our cutting and off-ball movement, we’ll limit turnovers and get more open looks and hope that this game will help us maintain a higher pressure defense in our next games.”
The girls varsity basketball team falls to 12-10 and is set to face the Glenbard West Hilltoppers on Jan. 23 at 6 P.M at Glenbard West High School.
