On Sept. 5, 2025, the DGS varsity football team took on its crosstown rivals, the DGN Trojans, in a highly anticipated matchup. However, the match itself was far from that as the Mustangs ended up losing 14-55.
In just the early minutes of the game, the Mustangs were down 0-20, and hope seemed to be alive after a touchdown from senior Aidan Kanazawa, making the score 7-20. However, with another touchdown later in the quarter and three more in the second quarter, the Mustangs were now down 7-48 with a running clock to start the half and a running student section to leave the stadium.
“At half we were just told by our coaches, do what we are practiced to do. Obviously in the first half, that didn’t happen, but we can learn from it and put that into perspective,” senior Kyran Lawson said.
The second half began, and with no real impact from the Mustangs early, both teams’ starters were ready to be subbed out. The team’s focus had shifted immediately from the first half. With a touchdown from DGN and a final one thrown from junior Vincent Junkas to end the game, it was all but close.
With a loss from Metea Valley last week and now picking up another loss from DGN, the Mustangs are now sitting at an 0-2 record.
“Last week our team had a lot of adversity, this week [the] same, but offensively our O-Line got it together and we handled some tough guys who are going to really good schools, and I think that everyone really came together and trusted each other and played for each other rather than ourselves,” senior Joseph Vieyra said.
DGS is now set to face Addison Trail on Sept. 13 for a West Suburban Conference thriller and Senior Night for DGS.
