On October 18th, Paramount Pictures released the long-awaited R-rated supernatural horror film Squeal of ‘Smile.’ Parker Finn directed ‘Smile 2,’ which stars Noami Scott, Lukas Gage, and Kyle Gallner.
Finn has a reputation for two things: his ability to create tension and make an eerie atmosphere. The film follows popular pop star Skye Riley (Scott) going on tour after she announces her return from a life-threatening car accident. We learn that Riley has been taking unprescribed drugs to relieve the pain in her back. We meet Riley’s very terrified drug dealer, Lewis (Gage), with the smile curse and pass it to Riley.
The curse in ‘Smile’ is all about this creepy – but deadly – phenomenon where people experience terrifying visions after witnessing a traumatic event. It spirals out of control, making it hard for the characters to escape the horror. The smile curse is like a contagious yawn, but instead of making you yawn, it brings fear and disturbing events from one person to another.
The movie opens up with an outstanding one-shot opener of Joel (Gallner) traumatized from the previous events of the first movie. He is currently cursed with the smile curse, and he believes that he needs to kill someone while someone else is watching to get rid of it.
Gallner’s acting was outstanding in this opener, displaying the anxiety and tension he had been experiencing while holding the curse. The one-shot take was masterfully done, and it had an immediate eerie tone. It’s like opening a mysterious, ancient box; you never know what dark secrets or eerie surprises might be lurking inside
The emotional depth of the characters adds layers of complexity to the horror. Making their fear and anxieties palpable. The actors give excellent performances, engrossing the audience with their realistic portrayals.
Visually, ‘Smile 2’ is a treat for horror enthusiasts. The cinematography captures the haunting beauty of the settings. The soundtrack adds tension to the film. The use of lighting and shadows enhances the quality of the film, creating a visually stunning yet terrifying experience.
