As both Messi and Ronaldo approach the end of their careers, soccer fans have long debated who has had the better career. There are many arguments surrounding these two players, but personally, I would argue that Lionel Messi has had the most successful career in soccer history.
Messi began playing soccer at the age of four. At age 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone disorder, but this setback didn’t stop him. Instead, he viewed it as an opportunity.
His grandmother Celia often took him to his soccer games. Despite his condition, she encouraged him to keep playing, even as he struggled with his height.
Eventually, Messi secured a contract with FC Barcelona, where he would go on to showcase his full potential. He became an outstanding scorer, consistently getting himself on the scoresheet.
During his time at Barcelona, Messi set numerous records, including 672 goals for the club (most all-time), 474 La Liga goals (most all-time), and 192 La Liga assists (most all-time). Cristiano Ronaldo, despite also playing in La Liga, was unable to match these records.
One of Messi’s most impressive records came in 2012, when he scored 91 goals in a calendar year, a Guinness World Record for the most official goals in a single year.
Ronaldo’s supporters often argue that he is the better player due to his physical dominance, versatility, and success across multiple leagues. However, Messi stands out for his exceptional technical skill, playmaking ability, and dribbling. Anyone who watches Messi’s highlights will see how effortlessly he dribbles past opponents.
For example, this video illustrates how Messi maneuvers around defenders with ease. While Ronaldo fans may point to his physical attributes, they often overlook Messi’s superior technical footwork and ability to create plays.
Without a doubt, Messi’s accomplishments outshine Ronaldo’s. Notably, Messi has won the most coveted prize in soccer: the World Cup.
Although Messi came close to winning in 2014, when Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the final, he finally achieved his dream eight years later, leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup.
In addition to winning the World Cup, Messi broke several records in the 2022 tournament, including the most games played at a men’s FIFA World Cup (26), becoming the first-ever two-time Golden Ball winner, and the first player to score in every round of the World Cup.
