On Wednesday Sept. 25 the stadium glowed with homecoming spirit as girls of all grade levels participated in the annual PowderPuff flag football game. The freshmen team defeated the sophomores to kick off the evening, and the night ended with a victory for the seniors over the juniors.
Teams demonstrated shining enthusiasm from the beginning of warmups–with personalized cheers, matching braids and enough eye black to paint the school, all grade levels brought the pep and fully immersed themselves in the PowderPuff tradition.
Junior Victoria Colorato played quarterback for her team and touched on why she’s been anticipating the PowderPuff game.
“I am most looking forward to our hype that we’re going to have in the touchdowns. We got our celebrations ready. I’m excited, and I hope I can support my girls the way they support me,” Colorato said.
Both the freshmen and sophomore teams had talented players who fought until the last buzzer. The game ended with a score of 16-6 and a win for the freshmen.
“I think it’s awesome. It gives everyone a chance to compete. And it’s practicing for next year when flag football will be an IHSA state sport so it’s kind of like a tryout for next season,” Pakowski said.
By the time the senior vs. junior game began, the sun had set and the stadium was ready for the upplerclassmen showdown.
Flag throws characterized much of the game, with the two unnecessary roughness penalties displaying the physicality these teams put up.
Senior Kamryn Gillespie put up an offensive and defensive performance that was out of this world. Gillespie played with an intensity that gave her team energy and confidence.
“Win and run people down, that was my mindset,” Gillespie said. “You gotta do what you gotta do, and what I did was win us the game.”
The seniors were the champions of their game, beating the juniors 35-13. The junior team battled until the very end and didn’t stop pursuing the end zone until time fully ran out.
Seniors Aleck Galvez and Jonathan Venouziou were some of the student coaches for the senior team. They were happy with their team’s performance and the outcome of the game.
“It feels great. Being our senior year, it’s one of the best feelings ever here with our grade,” Venouziou said.
Galvez also commented on how the team played.
“Everyone did their job and we came out with a win,” Galvez said.
Homecoming week will conclude with a pep assembly, parade and football game on Friday, Sept. 27 with a dance taking place on Saturday, Sept. 28.
