With homecoming traditions beginning, DGS clubs and activities are able to decorate an assigned door and compete against other clubs as a way of showing school spirit for homecoming week.
This year’s homecoming theme is Cosmic Glow Gala. Clubs and activities use the theme as a guide into how they decide to decorate their doors. After each club decorates their doors, there is a form sent out for the student body to vote for their favorite design.
Student Activities Director Jennifer Martinez explains the reason for decorating doors at the start of homecoming week.
“There’s a variety of clubs that participate in door decorating…clubs can decorate their doors unique to the theme of the Cosmic Glow Gala, but then also connected to the club identity,” Martinez said.
Martinez feels strongly about how door decorating influences school spirit in students and makes the community feel as one.
“You can’t help but smile when you’re passing a door…I feel like it [door decorating] helps lift spirits and helps people feel connected,” Martinez said.
Spanish teacher and Spanish Club sponsor Cyndi Montero continues this tradition every year with club members.
“We usually start the beginning of homecoming week…I think it shows our school spirit and it gets more people interested and involved in homecoming week,” Montero said.
Montero expresses her view on homecoming festivities and their impact on students.
“The cool thing is that even if you aren’t going to the dance, there are so many other things they can participate in,” Montero said.
Montero appreciates the way homecoming traditions help increase club exposure to a larger variety of students.
“It helps showcase our clubs so kids can see if they want to join…there’s so many amazing clubs DGS has to offer,” Montero said.
Senior Estella Rizzo is contributing to door decorating this year by helping decorate the door for Blue Crew. Rizzo states that club decorating helps create community.
“I think decorating for homecoming week is a way to get people excited and it’s a fun way to get clubs involved and do something together,” Rizzo said.
Rizzo believes that door decorating is an exciting start to the week for students.
“It’s kind of a reminder to students and staff of all the fun things coming up later in the week,” Rizzo said.
Door decorating for clubs and activities begins on Monday Sept. 23 and will continue throughout the week.
