The varsity boys golf team has been crowned conference champions for the ninth year in a row. The team went 6-0 this year, making them an undefeated team in conference.

When the team was not competing in a match, they could be found practicing at their home course; Village Greens. Second year varsity coach, Christopher Berenak understands the importance of practice.

“I think golf is a sport where you are either playing a round of golf whether that be 9 holes or 18 holes, at the range practicing, hitting balls or you’re working on your short game. I think the amount of time these boys do spend practicing has been one of the reasons we were able to be successful this year,” Berenak said.

Senior James Tyrell was one of the low scoring players at conference, shooting a 76, on a par 72 golf course.

“As I played better all season and continued to put up low scores, it helped the rest of the team to know it’s possible to shoot low in rough conditions and against tough competition,” Tyrell said.

Another key to the success of the golf team was to never let the pressure take over. Four year varsity golf player Zack Deplaris, explains how he didn’t let the stress of upholding a legacy get to him.

“I didn’t feel much pressure from those who played before us because I feel that we as a team wanted to do it for ourselves more than anybody else. We are not a family, we are a brotherhood, and we did it for each other because we wanted to be the conference champions as well, and not lose a legacy,” Deplaris said.

Having a record of 124-8 in conference in the last 21 years of golf at DGS, the team is looking forward to keeping the streak alive for years to come.
