Hozier’s ‘Tell it to my Heart’ tells it to the bottom of the charts
All around the world, EDM, officially known as electronic dance music, is known as the loud, beat-centric music that plays non-stop in clubs; it’s the exact opposite of what fans and critics would think of when they hear the name Hozier. His new single, “Tell it to my Heart,” produced on Oct. 29 of this year alongside Italian trio MEDUZA, is the epitome of annoying EDM. Since its release, the single has been disappointing listeners and inducing headaches everywhere.
The collaboration was completely unexpected to fans of Hozier’s previous works. His past two albums, “Wasteland, Baby!” and “Hozier,” encapsulate haunting and deep folk rock melodies, allowing listeners to find new meanings behind the lyrics with every listen. “Tell it to my Heart” is a cliche love song with lyrics haphazardly thrown in to go alongside the hardly musical electronic beat.
Tell it to my heart / ‘Cause I can’t keep guessing / If it’s me you’re missing
The lyrics are bland, basic and boring. While many may argue all unrequited love songs follow this same basic principle, the argument can be easily refuted by taking a deeper look at Hozier’s past works.
The way she shows me I’m hers and she is mine / Open hand or closed fist would be fine / Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
“Cherry Wine,” from the album “Hozier,” is a perfect example. The intelligent and unique comparisons and metaphors give the listener a perfect visualization of the deep struggle and temptations of love. “Tell it to my Heart” feels rushed-like they were just trying to find words that rhymed.
The poor lyrical choices are just the very beginning of what can be critiqued in this production. The music itself falls into the EDM genre, a stark contrast to Hozier’s usual works. With respect to the genre itself, this piece is as basic as it gets.
The choice of using EDM for this piece just feels wrong. Hozier’s incredible, award winning vocals are smothered by a repetitive and heavy dance beat; without a noticeable or interesting melody, the song gets boring 30 seconds in. The absolute 360 this song takes from Hozier’s usual work makes it feel like someone held him captive and forced him to sing it.
New music from the Irish musician has been highly anticipated by fans. With his latest release before his new single only being a live show recording, it is easy to see why fans have been disappointed with “Tell it to my Heart.” Hozier is a talented, multiple award winning artist; how did he go so wrong?
Even so, there may be a bright underside to this dark part of Hozier’s career. Sometimes artists have to get their one mistake out of the way in order to create something incredible; that’s the hope, at least. All fans can do now is wait.
