Lizzo’s debut album has no lack of upbeat ‘Tempo’

On April 19, Minneapolis-born rapper Lizzo released her debut album “Cuz I Love You.” This album shows that Lizzo is more than just the end credit voice for an NPR radio show, she’s taking over the world.

The first time I heard Lizzo’s music was when she opened for Haim at the Aragon Ballroom when I didn’t know she was even opening. What happened next was one of the most energetic 45-minute sets I’ve seen in the last two years. Luckily I’ve got an amazing album to go with it.

“Juice” and “Cuz I Love You” were the only two singles released, but they ended up being complimentary pieces to each other. “Juice” is full of shimmery guitars, tropic vibes and danceable vocals. The song is an ode to going wild and having fun because that’s just who you are.

On the other hand, “Cuz I Love You” is big brass jazz complemented by Lizzo’s powerful vocals singing “I’m crying cuz I love you” into every instrumental break. As a complete opposite to “Juice,” “Cuz I Love You” speaks to the crazy emotions that come with love and commitment, two feelings teenage girls are very, very familiar with.

My personal favorite track is right in between the two singles, the ultimate girl power anthem “Like A Girl.” The most important part is how empowering the lyrics are. They revolve around inspiration from Lauryn Hill and Serena Williams, while also speaking on a female president even when there wasn’t a precedent.

Now going to an opposite note, the two collaborations on this album are actually pretty good. In the club track “Tempo,” Lizzo brings hip-hop legend, Missy Elliot, on for a short collaboration. The beat is banging, the words are way too repetitive but Elliot’s cameo brings a rougher edge to a sweet track.

Overall, the album is mostly full of electronic dance beats and sick vocals by Lizzo and her flute. She just announced a tour including a stop on Sep. 28 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. After this album, you know at least one person who’s going to be there.
