Top things to do over the summer

More stories from Kylie Schatmeyer

Phineas and Ferb had it right; the the annual problem of summer vacation is finding a good way to spend it. So, before you give a monkey a shower, here are the top things to do during your summer vacation to make it Phineas and Ferb worthy.

1) Go to a concert. There is nothing better than seeing your favorite bands live. Country thunder or Lollapalooza are always a blast and close to home. However, if those are too expensive and you don’t want to break the bank, lawn seats for country artists or small bands are always affordable and still a lot of fun.

2) Road trip to the beach!  Some of the best beaches in the area are New Buffalo, Michigan, Centennial in Naperville, and North Avenue beach in Chicago.

3) Kayaking in downtown Naperville. Naperville offers kayaking on the river, which is a lot of fun and not expensive. Naperville also has many fun activities in the summer like shopping, the river walk, restaurants, etc.

4) Throw a BBQ/bonfire party. Invite your friends and have a great time relaxing and eating. If you don’t want to do all the host work, tell everyone to bring sides and you provide the entrees.

5) Go on nature walks. Get outdoors and admire nature. There are many beautiful places to hike/walk to get moving. Some ideas: Waterfall Glen, Bloomingdale Trail, Busse Woods Trail, Cal-Sag Trail, Chain O’ Lakes Bike Path, Chicago Lakefront Trail, Deer Grove Trail, Great Western Trail.

6) Go to the zoo. Whether you go with your little sibling, cousin, or just by yourself, spend the day looking at animals and having a great time.

7) Go watch a movie the right way at the Cascade drive in movie. Not only does Cascade show great movies, but snuggling up with blankets and your own snacks is fun and cheap.

8) Have a garage sale. Get rid of old items and make money! In the summer a lot of people will walk by making it the perfect time to have a garage sale.

9) Go to a baseball game. Our very own World Series-winning Cubs are a great team to go out and see.

10) Put a tarp on O’Brien hill and make a giant slip n slide! With some water, a tarp and soap, you will transform a hot summer day into a cool day of fun.

11) Visit six flags for the day. On a nice summer day, six flags is a thrill. Their new ride “The Joker” opens May 28!

12) Go to the farmer’s market. Commit to waking up early one morning and stock up on fresh fruits and grocery items. Get the best specialty items while supporting local shops.

13) Make your own Popsicle! When it’s hot outside, a great way to cool down is with a Popsicle. There are a million different Popsicle recipes online that you can choose from.

14) Go to Top Golf. With locations in Naperville and Wood Dale, Top Golf is a great way to spend the afternoon and have some delicious snacks. You don’t even need to be good at golf, just give it a swing.
