Remember the last time you were in class and your teacher dared to say the words “6-7”? What happened after that? Did the room go completely silent, or did everyone start laughing because of the weird, chaotic context behind the phrase?
I remember the first time I heard someone say “6-7.” I thought it was going to be some kind of joke, like “Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 7-8-9!” But I was totally wrong. Instead, after they said “6-7,” they started moving their hands up and down, and I just sat there completely confused.
But what does “6-7” actually mean? A lot of people say it just for fun, but most of them don’t really know where it came from. The funny thing is that the phrase isn’t really about its meaning at all—it’s about the strange, indescribable way people use it. Even online dictionaries don’t give one single definition for it, because everyone uses it differently on places like X or TikTok or Instagram.
So where did “6-7” even come from? Its first big appearance was in the 2024 song “doot doot (6 7)” by Skrilla, where the lyrics repeat “6-7” every time the beat drops. That moment in the song turned into the “meaningless” phrase everyone repeats today.
Another huge reason for its rise is social media, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat, all of them are filled with short clips, edits, and memes. A lot of these edits are of famous people, especially pro athletes. But one athlete in particular basically launched “6-7” into full on internet fame.
LaMelo Ball, point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, stands exactly 6’7” feet tall. So when people started making flashy TikTok edits of him, they synced those clips with Skrilla’s “doot foot (6 7)” to match his height. And from there, the phrase exploded. Suddenly, everyone was saying it, even if they had no idea why.
But why do people still say it? Even with so many different ways of saying it, and Gen-Z’s help with the term blowing up, it seems like not a lot of people even know what it means.
Also, Gen-Z has no idea what it means either! “6-7” is just a term that seems like an inside joke that no one gets but still laughs at. The phrase was turned into a meme from Gen-Z that spiraled into something that no one can even trace back, there are so many ways that kids of this generation have turned the original video into something more complex. So complex that very few people understand.
