Summer is approaching; the rising weather and the school fatigue are evidence of its arrival. As children, we looked forward to the end-of-year activities set up by loving elementary school teachers. But around those final days before we were given back our freedom, many of our elementary school teachers set up an ABC countdown to the end of the year, where the last 26 days of the year were a letter of the alphabet.
The 2-month break is our opportunity as young adults to act as children once more: waking up late, having more free time, and taking family vacations. DGS’s academics were tough, but we’ll leave DGS with the freedom we haven’t tasted in months. Here’s a taste of the school year wrapped, but also some things to look forward to.
Anything but a backpack: This day saw many objects never expected to be seen on school grounds, like shopping carts, microwaves, and even trash bins.
Beach: With summer approaching, it’s finally time for DGS to go on vacation to other places. Whether it’s a fun night at home or a far beach vacation, DGS students finally get to rest.
Coffee: Many DGS students stop by for coffee at Dunkin, Starbucks, and even the school cafe. With spills galore, drinks are a memory for everyone.
Donuts: DGS received many Duncan Donuts’ freebies this year, so make sure your gift cards are used before they expire in June.
Election: DGS’s mock election was an operation for social studies classes, with most students going to the west events to cast their ballots.
Future: The end of the school year forces DGS students to look ahead in their academics or careers. What comes after the year ends is left up to the student.
Green: The leaves and grass have finally fully returned to their rightful places, creating a beautiful backdrop for our summer adventures.
Happiness: Despite the dreary winter months, DGS kept its spirit from winter sports, close friend groups, and even our winter spirit assembly, which the juniors won.
Ice cream: The end-of-year celebration is approaching in the commons, with lemon push-pops being given out every year.
June/July: These are the true summer months. The sun is shining every day, the UV is at a proud 10, and the thought of going outside is pleasant.
Kindness: Okay, duh, to be kind is a lesson we’ve had engraved in our minds forever, but random acts like a compliment or a borrowed pencil go a long way.
Love: Like many years in the past, we’ve continued our tradition of delivering our red, purple, and orange crush cans, sharing affection for our friends and partners.
Mustang: Marty the Mustang has made many guest appearances, but the student body is still left wondering who the mysterious individual is under the suit.
Nostalgia: Looking back to previous school years allows us to realize how far we have come. From addition to calculus, the road to where we are now was a long one.
Outdoors: Our courtyard is basically the only source of vitamin D we see during the school day, so enjoy being able to go outside whenever you want before you’re trapped in a classroom.
Pajama: With our break underway, many of us will be able to laze around in our sleepwear all day without a care in the world about who sees it.
Quiet: Unfortunately, silence is not something DGS is good at. Fortunately, we’re never lacking during football games or during our spirit assemblies.
Relax: Relaxing is something that many students haven’t had the opportunity to do in months; after a hard-fought semester, it’s time for a well-deserved summer break.
Sunset: The sun has set on the class of ‘25 and will soon set on the rest of DGS. Grades will be set, and the sun will rise on a new, short era of our lives.
TikTok: Whether we want to admit it or not, DGS has been plagued by doomscrollers, dances, and trends that require administrative intervention.
University: Even if you’re not going to Harvard or any other Ivy League, it’s still fun to rock their sweaters and hoodies.
Video: Senior Video.
Write: After writing multiple essays and having to brainstorm why Romeo and Juliet had communication issues, students can turn off their brains for two months.
X-tra: Over the topness practically defines DGS. From our vibrant sports teams to the Blueprint, we don’t shy away from being expressive.
Yearbook: Everyone is trying to get others to sign their yearbook as a testament to their friendship, and maybe even popularity.
Zoom to summer: With the last day of school approaching, everyone is ready to leave their pencils and worksheets behind to enjoy their summer.
With the wind in our sails to leave for the summer, we’re left to wonder what the sunny months will bring. Although we wish for the end of the school year, we should appreciate the memories we made to get here.
