Most boys dream of becoming astronauts when they are older, and senior Grant Major can relate as he found a new interest in working in the aerospace field as a welding engineer.
Major’s decision to try welding was spontaneous, so much so that after watching a few welding TikToks and talking to his uncle, who is also in the field, he decided to give it a shot.
“I just picked up welding. I don’t know. It was kind of random,” Major said laughing.
He is a part of the welding program at the Technology Center of Dupage(TCD) and leaves high school most days to weld. He enjoys the class because of what he has learned, and it brings him joy.
“The teacher there, Mr. G is an awesome guy, I can’t get enough of that class. That class is filled with a bunch of interesting people, some people I wouldn’t typically be around,” Major said with a smile.
Major enjoys the break from his monotonous day at school. Going into his fourth year as a student at DGSS, welding gives him the refresh he is looking for.
“Junior year was the most plain year of my life. It was just going to school, going through the motions and all of that, and starting senior year was such a good refresh because I like doing welding and stuff like that,” Major said.
In his free time, Major enjoys exploring with friends. A big part of why he decided to take up welding is because of his desire to try new things.
“Typically I would be hanging out with my friends, I be going out a lot, I explore with my friends. Chilling out inside the house, swimming, going to places like the beach, going downtown,” he said. “I tend to be more social. I just want to go out, I just want to enjoy things.”
Major is curious as to where his welding career will take him, but he hopes he will work in the aerospace industry.
“I want to work with an aerospace team to build stuff,” he said.
Senior Alex Moore, another DGS welding student, is in the same TCD class as Major.
“He’s pretty focused. He looks forward to it [The TCD Welding classes]. From what I can tell he looks pretty excited,” Moore said.
Major hopes to reach his goal through perseverance and in his words, “taking charge of your journey.”
