Senior Michelina Spano has twirled through the past five years of her life using the movements of dance. Spano is the co-captain of the DGS fillies team this year. She has been a member of the varsity team since her freshman year, after she had quit gymnastics.
“I never danced when I was growing up; I was a gymnast, but when I was entering highschool I stopped gymnastics. I wanted to try something new and picked dance because my sister was a dancer her whole life. I really loved how fun it looked and what the environment was like from watching her,” Spano said.
The environment of dance swept her away and the bonds she had created through dance have kept her just as passionate for the sport. Spano has met many of her best friends throughout the sport, but most importantly, she discovered herself. This year, she had to step up to become one of the role models for the team.
Junior Nia Ayala is also on the Fillies dance team and speaks on her perspective as having Spano as a captain on the team.
“Michelina always strives to build relationships with everyone on the team which I believe is a great quality to have in a leader, and her talent is so inspiring because we all strive to be on the same level of talent as her,” Ayala said.
When Spano is not at dance, she enjoys hanging out with her friends and family, shopping and driving around. She also works at Smoothie King. Her favorite memory of her dance career was last year when the Fillies placed 6th during day two of the IHSA state finals.
Spano has not committed to a university yet but she hopes to attend the University of Kentucky Lexington and major in public health.
