The hallways of every high school around the world are crowded-it’s not a problem unique to Downers Grove South. However, not every high school has hallways as large as Downers Grove South, yet the hallways are still quite crowded.
The solution to this problem? A hallway etiquette that everyone in the school will definitely follow.
Yield to wheelchairs and people carrying equipment. Both people have limited maneuverability, and frankly, it’s common decency to allow people with disabilities (physical or otherwise) to go ahead of you.
Don’t block up doors to stairways. It’s annoying and tedious since the stairwells are crowded enough as it is. People shove their way up and down the deathly tight stairs in the vain hope of…something. No matter how hard you try to get up the stairs faster, you only get to your next class maybe three seconds earlier.
Know what’s going on around you. Bumping into other people and making messes in the hallway isn’t fun. It’s going to be exhausting for you and for the janitors who are inevitably going to have to pick up after you, so just keep your head up and be mindful of where you step.
Match the pace of the people in front of you. So, don’t run through the halls, don’t drag your feet across the floor and don’t walk too slowly. Just move at either a speed walk or regular walk.
Don’t group up in the hall. Everyone likes talking with their friends. However, most people also like not being tardy. If you don’t want to move along in the hallway, then go to the learning commons to talk with your friends.
Be understanding of fellow students. Everybody has their bad days, so don’t be too upset because someone was walking like they were half-asleep, or had their head down. Either just pass them, or tough it out and walk behind them.
