With a new location this year, the DGS pep rally’s practices and performances help start up homecoming weekend. The pep rally will take place in the large gym on Oct. 20, unlike last year when it took place on the football field.
Student Activities Director Jennifer Martinez organizes all things homecoming and makes all decisions based on the event. DGS and DGN have both decided that they will hold their pep rallies indoors this year.
“This year we’re moving the rally back inside…so it’s not going to be outside,” Martinez said.
Junior Kayla Meyer spoke on her perspective and thoughts regarding the annual pep assembly and its new location.
“I’m glad the pep rally is inside this year…it makes you feel more involved in it,” Meyer said.
Meyer believes that the pep rally and other homecoming festivities create a sense of community and helps her and her peers get excited about the dance.
“I think it really brings the students and staff together and it makes everyone feel like they are part of the school,” Meyer said.
Senior and co-captain of the Fillies varsity dance team Michelina Spano will be performing alongside her team at the pep assembly. She shares how the new location may affect the audience’s perception of the team’s performance.
“When you’re watching a dance, the atmosphere can really affect how it looks. If you’re up close to the performance, you’ll be able to see the more intricate and in-depth moves than if you were further away,” Spano said.
Spano also mentions the process of working on the dance performance in order to get it ready for the pep rally.
“We’ve been learning our dance for a few weeks and we constantly practice it to get it ready for an audience. We start learning the dance about a month in advance,” Spano said.
The Fillies perform at the pep assembly annually and will be performing during halftime of the homecoming football game as well.
The homecoming pep assembly will take place on Friday Oct. 20 during a shortened school day. The dance will be the following day on Oct. 21.
