Rediscovering JB: how I relived my childhood during quarantine

Lily Kelliher

You know the feeling when you rediscover an old hobby or talent and you just don’t stop? That was me rediscovering my love for old, 2012 Justin Bieber.

In first grade, I was the biggest Justin Bieber superfan you would have ever seen. Yes–that was me–in all of my first-grade amazingness, and most I was definitely the most iconic version of myself yet. Every day, 24/7, I was always singing my heart out, and recently I have rediscovered my love for old JB.

At my young age, before I went to my first concert ever–2012 Believe tour–I decided on my top five:

#1) “Baby”: a classic, his first hit and the best song of the tour.
#2) “Boyfriend”: I mean yes, I didn’t have a boyfriend but it’s still good!
#3) “All Around the World”: this song made six-year-old me feel powerful.
#4) “Beauty and a Beat”: the best music video ever.
#5) “One Less Lonely Girl”: I loved when he brought someone on stage so I thought that if it was one of my favorites, then I could go on stage.

I know, amazing music choice for a six-year-old. Although I definitely did not understand the meaning of literally any of the songs, I would say I still had pretty good taste. When I say I listened to these songs 24/7, I mean literally constantly.

I even had posters, blankets, pillows, stickers, pajamas, a backpack, and–best of all– a JB toothbrush that sang while I brushed my teeth. I really had it all. Then times changed and I grew out of it, but I still went back to his music every once in a while.

Especially during quarantine…I listened all the time. You know the feeling when you rediscover an old hobby or talent and you just don’t stop? That was me rediscovering my love for old, 2012 Beiber.

A true highlight of the long, miserable quarantine. And so, I found a new top five:

#1) “Ennie Meenie”: I love the video and the nostalgia brings me back to the good days.
#2) “Beauty and a Beat”: still the best music video.
#3) “Mistletoe”: makes Christmas so much better and makes me so happy.
#4) “As Long As You Love Me”: the video and song bring me back to my childhood.
#5) “Boyfriend”: still no boyfriend but I do love it.

Although I do adore all of his songs, these are definitely my top. Everything about them: the nostalgia, the beat, and the difference in his voice during those songs versus today (a lot less autotuned). I definitely have an emotional attachment to all these songs and many memories with so many different people in my life where these songs played a role.

Singing my heart out and dreaming of being on stage with all my friends and family. 10 years later, I think it is safe to say that being a Justin Bieber superfan impacted me in many ways and made my childhood so much better.
