Thirteen DGS math team members will compete in the IHSA State tournament May 5 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Competitors include junior Tom Blackmore in Algebra 2, senior Ian Bales in Precalculus, junior Sam Guagliardo, junior Josh Viacrusis, senior Kyle Tolentino, senior David Aronson, junior Kirk Hoffman, senior Armin Taheri, Blackmore and Bales in Junior and Senior eight-person, sophomore Lestin Kandakudy, junior Mateo Garcia, sophomore Mark Haddleton, senior Miriam Arroyo and senior Brandon Onuasitis in Calculator.

Math team coach Andrew Kaim said he hopes the group will do well based on their state-qualifying performance at regionals.

“We’ve been practicing every week for about an hour, and in conjunction with a lot of the informal competitions that we run in school and our performance at regionals, we were able to qualify for state. We are hoping to do the best that we can,” Kaim said.
