“Beautiful Things” from the unreleased album “Cloud Nine,” by Megan Moroney, was truly a touching piece of work. Despite her usual lyrics typically relating to being in love or going through a breakup, this new song took a turn for the better.
She opens with a line that, as a young female, immediately hits home. Moroney displays the vision of her young self having complications with a group of friends and realizing she was not invited after seeing their locations posted without her on social media.
As she continues throughout the song, she encourages her listeners to keep going and reassures them that they will “be alright.” During this, she also creates analogies that relate to natural issues such as hurricanes, mocking birds and fires. This creates a parallel to the listener to remind them that most things are simply out of their control.
Moroney then moves into a section of the song where she reassures her audience with positive affirmations.
“You’re pretty and you’re smart/ God made a work of art/ Girl, don’t pick yourself apart.”
For a teenager, often when things don’t go in your favor, you put all the blame on yourself. This typically leads to negative thoughts, such as feeling like you need to change something about yourself or feeling like you’re not good enough for someone or something.

As Moroney sings, it is clear to her audience through her vocals that this is something that she has gone through as well. As she gets through the chorus, you can hear the rasp in her voice that commonly is experienced when one is choked-up, or on the verge of tears.
The times that she has performed “Beautiful Things” live, she has used only her own vocals and her acoustic guitar. However, in the studio version, you can hear various instruments such as the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel guitar, bass and percussion.
Moroney uses these instruments to create a calm vibe for her listeners, then the pace of the music eventually builds up as the chorus is sung to allow her listeners to feel seen and understood. The change of pace helps with the audience to follow to the beat of the song, as well as
The song “Beautiful Things” is a piece of work that perfectly describes the situations that so many teenagers go through, but may feel alone in. The reassurance that Moroney accurately portrays in this song, using emotion and scenarios, creates a comforting environment for her listeners.
