“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” directed by Rian Johnson is the successful sequel to “Knives Out” that came out in 2019. This new thriller staring Daniel Craig reprising his role as Detective Beniot Blanc who is invited by billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) to come to a private island for a murder mystery party along with Miles’s friends. The film is rated PG-13.

The film takes the audience on a private island for a murder mystery party hosted by Miles Bron (Norton). Each character was in need to escape for some “normalcy” meanwhile burned out Detective Beniot Blanc (Craig) was mysteriously invited. The party itself was planned for Miles to “die” but an actual attempted murder killed one of the invited guests, leaving the party to be a crime scene.

An interesting aspect of the film was that it takes place during the Covid-19 pandemic. Not only could the audience relate to the characters who were in lockdown. They could also make fun of them as there are many details of past pop-culture moments about celebrities who refused past Covid guidelines. The story in all has great pacing and keeps the audience at the edge of their seats.

The film features an incredible star studded cast such as: Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick and Leslie Odom Jr. along with some surprise cameos. Just like an onion, peeling back the layers of money, power and status makes the characters stink with greed and shallowness and that is what was so well done. The different rich person cliché was enjoyable and not like something that has been ever portrayed in other films.

Behind the lens, Rian Johnson carefully captures sophistication and clear corruption. The cinematography was vibrant and no stone was left unturned as the audience could encounter every detail the director wanted you to experience. Even if the answer was right, a fun twist would be added to the surprise ultimately.

In addition to the rich person stereotype, the story felt as if the director was making fun of The Kardashian family. Back in October of 2020, Kim Kardashian threw herself a 40th birthday party on a private island along with her family and friends according to CNN Style. This may have been a coincidence or just a subtle joke that Johnson played.

The Knives Out sequel has made a total of $13.3 million worldwide in the box office according to Box Office Mojo. Although the feature was released on Nov. 23, 2022 for an early preview, it will be available on Netflix Dec. 23, 2022. Not only could Netflix make more money with a full theatrical release, it would’ve given audiences a better experience to see in theaters and not just on their phones.
