Pep band’s drums reflected the spiking strength of the varsity boys volleyball team, bringing a new energy to the Mustang’s blocks and serves. The Mustangs won two straight sets over Glenbard East, 25-15 and 25-22, remaining undefeated in conference, 8-0.

“I know we didn’t have 11 missed serves tonight; being able to put the ball in play makes a huge difference,” head coach Kurt Steuer said. “Our blocking is something we work on everyday also, it’s our timing and these guys taking it to heart and into the game. Where we want to do our block-in schemes makes a big difference too, and it helps set up our defense in the long run.”

Junior middle hitter Mason Kolar had two block assists, four kills and four ins.

“Our first set our blocks were phenomenal, we played a really good game our first set,” Kolar said. “Things carried over to the second set but we got to work through adversity and carry through with that momentum we get from winning the first set.”

Junior setter Nick Koch had nine assists, seven digs and one service ace. Kock said that keeping a lead in games is something they need to work on.

“It was a great team win tonight, we have to keep working with the long season ahead of us. We want to go out, keep getting better and beat everybody that steps on our court,” Koch said. “We shouldn’t drop a set in our conference and we don’t plan to.”

Senior setter Colin Mason led the team with 13 assists, he also had two digs but three collective errors. He said something the team needs to improve on is scoring points when the opposing team is serving.

“It feels good to be a team player and help us get the win,” Mason said. “It’s part of the job, we bleed blue but we need to start playing sideout volleyball.”

The next set of games happen April 22 at 5.p.m. for the Richard Griesheim invite.
