Senior forward Mallory Qualizza juked around a Bolingbrook player, then launched the ball over to senior forward Priscilla Plascencia who catapulted the ball into the top left corner of the net to give the varsity girls soccer team their first win of the season over Bolingbrook.

“I was honestly surprised [when I scored]; I was in the right position, but I was like ‘wow okay I got it’ so I felt good,” Plascencia said about the 2-1 victory at home.

With a 2-0 lead early in the second half, Bolingbrook started to battle back with a surplus of steals and a goal.

“It’s always good to get the first win under the belt,” head soccer coach Christopher Hernandez said. “[With] the first game there’s always going to be some nerves, and I think the mark of a good team is not just winning. Sometimes you have to grind out victories and this was one of those events.”

Junior defender Teyani Sharkey had three blocks throughout the game. Sharkey has played on varsity all three years of high school.

“I feel like this wasn’t as good as we could’ve played, but we’re still getting used to everyone’s dynamics and how each other plays,” Sharkey said. “I think we were a little nervous for our first game and home opener but we still ended up with the result that we wanted.”

Junior forward Emily Petring was a starter and she scored the first goal of the game at the 13 minute mark.

“It’s definitely good to start off with a win,” Petring said. “Coming off strong from the last season has a big impact so I’m excited for this season. We definitely could’ve played better as a team, but obviously it’s the first game so it’s just something to improve on.”

The Mustangs take on Naperville North on March 19 at 12 p.m. at Naperville North high school.
