Fast-paced blocking and a surplus of defensive rebounds gave the varsity boys basketball team new life in their game against Leyden, helping them to their first home game win of the season 62-33.

“I wish it would’ve been a little earlier in the season of course,” head basketball coach Zach Miller said. “But I guess if it had to be on any night, senior night would have been a great night for these guys.”

Senior Charles Shaw led the charge, scoring 20 points with two blocks.

“With this being my senior night and last home game, it feels good to have helped the team,” Shaw said. “It feels good to have gotten [Coach Miller’s] first home win.”

Senior Nathan Waterman scored 11 points with three assists and two blocks.

“[This was] a real good team victory today; everybody got action and got what they wanted,” Waterman said. “I really just focus on getting the win at the end of the day, we played really well tonight and valued every possession.”

Senior Keaton O’ Leary had his first game back after facing both an injury and illness, scoring a two pointer with two made free throws.

“I think being out the whole time and realizing how much you can take for granted [makes you] want to come back, work your butt off and give it 100%. You realize that everything can be taken so quickly,” O’ Leary said.

The Mustangs take on Proviso East on Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at DGS for their final home game.
