On March 17, Illinois voters went to the polls for the primary elections for the 2026 midterm, which is the election in the middle of a four-year presidential term. Projections seemed to match the election results. People across the nation, all the way down to Downers Grove, were watching the elections closely.
The 2026 midterm election turns heads because the current president, House of Representatives and Senate lean Republican. Midterms, no matter which party holds the majority members at the time, attract attention to see if Congress will change its majority party or not.
Illinois had a lot of notable elections in its districts, but the election to watch was the race for the open Senate seat after Dick Durbin announced his retirement
Out of the poll predictions collected by the New York Times on margins for victory in the Illinois Senate Democratic primaries, 75% of pollsters predicted Raja Krishnamoorthi was going to win by a margin. However, these predictions proved to be wrong as Juliana Stratton won the primaries by 40.1% compared to Krishnamoorthi with 33.2% of the votes, according to CBS.
The New York Times only had one pollster for the Republican primaries, Emerson College; they predicted that Don Tracy would win by a 2% margin. Their prediction was authenticated as Tracy won 39.9% of the vote, a 17.1% margin from his closest competitor, Jeannie Evans.
Incumbent Governor JB Pritzker ran for his position again, being the only Democratic candidate to run. While the main Republican candidate for governor was Darren Bailey, other candidates were hoping to pick up the win. This is Bailey’s second time running against Pritzker since 2022.
In the midst of these significant elections, many Illinois voters hoped to amplify their values in Congress by filling in their ballots. Many economic, social and immigration policies were important to voters in these primaries. One of these voters was Senior Marley Birch, who wanted to make their voice heard through participation.
“I want[ed] to look for a candidate who would kind of stand up against the Democratic party’s standing right now. [It] was important to me to find a candidate who would speak up, would share their position, and I was also looking for people who are for abolishing ICE. [I also cared about their] beliefs around the environment and how much money they were taking from certain corporations,” Birch said.
A local man, Anthony Christian, was interviewed by Blueprint staff while he was walking out of his polling location. When asked about his values in voting, Christian said, “preserving democracy.”
As of February 2026, Gallup claims that 29% of Americans believe that the most pressing issues for Americans are the government/poor leadership, 20% believe it’s immigration and 11% believe the biggest concerns lie with the economy in general. Voters went to the polls with these issues in mind.
Senior Daniela Giuffre also kept her values in mind when voting. Giuffre believed in voting for a more progressive candidate as opposed to a more establishment candidate. For example, she prefers a candidate who doesn’t take much money from AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, as she doesn’t agree with the PAC’s views.
“I also personally don’t think that we should have the connections that we do to Israel, so that’s why I ended up voting for Juliana Stratton for the Senate. She was a lot more progressive than [Krishnamoorthi] and took very little money from AIPAC. She was also backed by JB Pritzker, and I think he’s a good governor,” Giuffre said.
AIPAC is a membership organization that lobbies for a closer relationship between the U.S. and Israel, supporting political candidates who promise to work toward this goal. AIPAC claims to be the largest pro-Israel PAC in America.
Senior Lukas Meliukstis worked as an election judge for the primaries, witnessing all the different perspectives and people who wanted to make their votes count. He saw that voting could be made easy and inviting as well.
“I think the biggest thing that I experienced as a student election judge was the positivity stemming from the people that I worked with. I just noticed that they encouraged voters to come and vote again after they had left; it just kind of stuck with me. It showed me that there are a lot of people who care about other people’s voices being heard,” Meliukstis said.
On election day, Nov. 3, 2026, the nation will officially vote for its representatives, senators, governors and other local seats. For young people, voting for the first time can be difficult without knowing about what policies or candidates they want to support yet. However, with research on values, policies and the effects on one’s community, DGS students can find reassurance in choosing a candidate who will have them in mind while in office.

AIPAC es una organización de membresía que hace presión política por una relación cercana entre los Estados Unidos y Israel, apoyando candidatos que prometen trabajar hacia este objetivo.
Estudiante en su último año, Lukas Meliukstis trabajó de juez de elección en las primarias, observando las diferentes opiniones y personas que querían hacer sus boletas contar. Él vio que la acción de votar puede ser fácil.
“Yo creo que la cosa más importante que yo sentí trabajando como juez de elección fue la positividad saliendo de mis compañeros de trabajo.
