‘We Live In Time’ was released in theaters nationwide on October 18, 2024. The film stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield and is directed by John Crowley. It currently rates at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.3/10 on IMDb.
The film follows Almut played by Florence Pugh and Tobias played by Andrew Garfield through their past, present, and future life. Following them is a heavy truth regarding Almut’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer. It deals with the complexities of a looming fate and how to handle that inevitable grief.
Because the story revolves around two everyday people the cast is more relatable for the audience. All of the emotions that Almut and Tobais feel in their ever changing world can be familiar to many who’ve experienced grief in their own lives.
Pugh gives one of the standout performances of her career portraying the side of grief for yourself and the life you’re leaving behind. She encapsulates the feeling of knowing the end is near and how to handle your remaining time. From a laugh to a tear, Pugh takes you inside the mind of Almut and shows the audience the perspective of someone living their life to the fullest they possibly can.
Garfield pulls at the audience’s heartstrings with a performance of grief that many might find familiar in their own life. He takes the feeling of loss in his own life and brings it to Tobias to create a character that feels so full for everyone he loves. This caring love is what brings the viewers to the side of Tobias and makes them feel for him the entire film.
Director John Crowley is known for his heartfelt stories full of life and character that the audience can see themselves in and this is no exception. He wants the audience to remember that they should take advantage of all the time they have with their loved ones. By choosing to have the film not go in chronological order, it emphasizes the message to cherish the time you have with the ones you love and shows the audience that they won’t remember the lengths of time they had with someone.
But they’ll remember the moments they lived to the fullest with them.
The score is composed by Bryce Dessner and its light feel adds to the life that Almut and Tobias bring. The use of string and unique percussion instruments combine to create an angelic sound, reflecting upon the characters, specifically Almut. From ‘Carousel’ to ‘Ice Rink Epiphany,’ the audience can hear the emotions the characters are feeling through the music.
‘We Live In Time’ is a film that deals with the complexities of loss in a way that many who’ve lost someone close to them would resonate with. Just make sure to remember your tissues when you go to the cinema to see this tear-jerking film.
