Mar. 14, or 3/14, is also known as Pi Day, since the first three digits of Pi are 3.14. Back in elementary school, I had the opportunity to celebrate Pi day with the dessert that shares a similar name, pie. I believe it’s important to celebrate the little things in life, so I’ve compiled a list of the best five pies to treat yourself with this Pi day.

5. Spinach Pie

Yep, this list is not just for the sweet treats. Spinach pie is also referred to as Spanakopita. I love Greek food, and I will never turn down a spinach pie.

The flaky puff pastry that encases the warm, creamy filling consisting of mainly spinach and feta cheese is a total crowd pleaser. It’s also not difficult to make and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients. I can’t think of a single downside to this pie.

4. Lemon Meringue

I admit, I’m not a huge citrus fan. In fact, I avoid citrus whenever I can. However, lemon and lime are the only exceptions.

Lemon Meringue pie reminds me of summer, which is a nice pick-me-up when you eat it during the colder months of the year. It’s also not tart at all, which isn’t expected when a pie is made out of lemon. This was also Abraham Lincoln’s favorite pie, so it deserves some credit.

3. Key Lime

You might be thinking key lime pie is too similar to lemon meringue, but a true pie connoisseur knows that there are differences between the two of them. It’s also the official pie of the state of Florida.

Besides the fact that the two pies are made from completely different fruits, they have totally different tastes. A key lime pie is more tangy than a lemon meringue. Key lime pie also typically uses whipped cream, while lemon meringue uses a meringue instead.

2. French Chocolate Silk

I will always love a French chocolate silk pie. I love the creamy, rich chocolate filling, and the chocolate shavings on top. The only downside is when the pie is too rich and leaves the consumer feeling more full and less satisfied, but typically it’s the perfect consistency, not too thick but not too light.

It’s one of those pies that can be enjoyed at pretty much any temperature. Now the whipped cream can make or break the pie, because it can be too thick and ruin the flow of the pie, or it can be nice and light, providing structure.

1. Banana Cream Pie

Depending on who you are, my top choice for a pie may be anticlimactic to you. I feel like banana cream pie is either loved or hated. This pie was introduced with the recent addition of bananas in the U.S. about 125 years ago.

I grew up eating bananas a lot, and noticed early on that there is a significant lack of mainstream banana-based desserts in this world. Now, a banana cream pie has an authentic and incredible banana taste, with a thick, creamy consistency that pairs wonderfully with the graham cracker crust. I think banana cream pie deserves a little more love in this world.
