Prom night is viewed as the epitome of some seniors’ senior year. A night full of fun and laughter signifies the conclusion of their high school career. So, many of them were not in attendance.
Following the DGS Under The Stars prom celebration on Saturday, April 26, a school-wide senior ditch day left the school with only around 2% of the senior class in attendance. This means that approximately 98% of seniors were absent on Monday, April 28.
With absence requests flooding in, most classes were left empty or with other underclassmen.
While around 98% of seniors weren’t in attendance, there were still nearly 2% who attended school. Reasons may vary, but senior Natalie Murphy explains why it was crucial for them to cut off their weekend and get back in the groove of school.
“I decided to attend school on Monday because I believe that it is important to be present for your classes in order to understand the course material fully and receive additional help if that extra support is needed,” Murphy said.
While missing school used to be something kids looked forward to, it is now one of the major stresses for high school students. Murphy also noted that attending school not only sets yourself up for success, but also to set an example for underclassmen.
Teachers certainly appreciated those who were in attendance, but students were taking advantage of their senior year when not attending on Monday.
Senior Ashley Cotner allows us insight as to why “ditch day” was an important event to partake in.
“My friends were at a lake house so it was nice to skip Monday so that we could stay one night longer. Senior skip days are crucial to senior year because it’s one of those things like prom, senior assassins, or senior sunrise that you look forward to since freshman year” Cotner said.
Senior “ditch day” has become an event most students don’t want to miss. For seniors, their year is about to end, and for some, their time together is coming to a close.
“Since our senior year is almost done, we want to make the most of each moment we have left with our friends before college,” Cotner said.
Senior ditch day is an inevitable part of a student’s high school experience. Whether or not to participate is the question up for debate. Following the “ditch day,” seniors were back in attendance on Tuesday April 29, with refreshed smiles and many photos of prom to share with their friends and staff.
