Snow days have changed from the way they were before. Instead of having the day completely off like a traditional snow day, students now have to log onto their Chromebooks and join virtual Google meetings to do e-learning. Although very different from the snow days we had before, e-learning days are much better.
For starters, the work we have to do is much easier compared to the work we’d have to do on a regular day. There’s basically no work, usually just a hastily put-together Google Doc and everyone has their cameras and microphones off. The only work you have to do is just the homework that was assigned the day before.
Some might be concerned about e-learning eating up their valuable time in the snow, but they shouldn’t be. With the lack of work that happens, students can expect to have plenty of time to enjoy the winter season before the day is over.
E-learning is even better for teachers. Instead of being concerned about having to cram extra lessons and assignments in before tests, they can go over the material and give students time to study and ask questions. Not only does this help teachers, but it also helps the grades of students.
Speaking of enjoying the seasons, having e-learning days means that we don’t have a day forcibly interrupting the end of the year. You may not like summer, but having extra days in the school year can be horrible, especially if you’re planning on taking a vacation.
E-learning also keeps students productive– be honest, who’s doing any schoolwork on a day off? Having classes can get students in a productive mindset, and as a result, they can make sure any homework they have gets completed.
Sometimes teachers might not even have any work for students. Imagine logging into a Google Meet for attendance and then being told the only thing you have to do is study, or work on a project that you’ve already finished. Having all this free time on your hands, there’s no excuse to not finish your work and enjoy time outside.
Having the day completely off on snow days is fun, but they don’t compare at all to e-learning days. With e-learning, you get most of the benefits of having the day off with the added bonus that you don’t have to make up a day at the end of the year.
