On Sept. 22, the DGS varsity football team (2-3) took on Morton High School (1-4) and dominated them 34-0 for the 19th time in a row.
The game started off quickly for DGS as they got to the red zone via a big run from junior running back Kayden Smith, but they lost their chance after Morton held strong at the goaline and turned the ball over on downs.
DGS’s next drive resulted in a score after a long seven-minute drive, delivered via air by senior quarterback Will Potter. Potter ran another later in the quarter and set the score at 14-0 midway through the second.
“We know our guys can do well with good practice and preparation this week,” senior linebacker RJ Samuels said.
Toward the end of the half, senior defensive back Connor Kelly picked off Morton, allowing Potter to get his third touchdown before halftime, this time a pass to wideout Cameron Kasper, making it 20-0 at halftime.
South continued to rumble in the second half by forcing a turnover and scoring with the newfound chance. Potter threw to senior tight end Maxwell Cherep for a hat trick through the air, 27-0. DGS continued to roll, finding the endzone once more in the end and placing the final score at 34-0.
DGS looks to have a rivalry week in which they play Hinsdale South (2-3) on Sept. 29. The Hornets are coming off a 37-34 loss to Willowbrook, who DGS beat on Sept. 21. DGS hopes to go 2-2 following their victory last year against rivals Hinsdale South.
“This game really defines our season in a big portion of it. We have been practicing really well, making sure we remember what we did in practice this week and not letting the pressure and all the people get in our heads this Friday,” Kelly said.
