Kim’s Uncle Pizza is a small pizza joint found in the heart of downtown Westmont. Now, that doesn’t mean the place isn’t popular; it takes four hours of waiting time in advance before actually picking up the pizza.
Two pizzas were ordered, one with: sausage, green peppers and onions, and one with: pepperoni and onions. The total price between two 14-inch pizzas was–$53.26, which ended up being worth it for the taste.
The crust of the two pizzas was of a cracker texture, giving a note of garlic and spice. It tasted a little crisp and burnt, but it added to the texture and was enjoyable.
The sauce was interesting because it wasn’t thick, but packed a real punch. There was spice in it, just enough to make you thirsty, but not too much to overpower the flavors of other ingredients. The sauce tastes garlicky in a joyful way, a little overpowering, but otherwise strong and justified with taste.
The onions were buried deep beneath the cheese, also creating a distinct sweet flavor, like finding a little bit of salt on the top of chocolate. These onions were cooked out of the oven as well, as they were easy to chew and looked transparent and glossy.
The thin layer of cheese was interesting to me because it felt a little bit lost in the flavor, used as a bridge between the sausage pieces on top and the onions, sauce and crust on the bottom, like a rift, but it felt underappreciated compared to the other ingredients.
The sausage was a rough sphere shape, considered “normal” for what sausage would look like on a pizza. It was defined by little pieces of black pepper, and had a pop of juicy texture, fatty juice that contrasted the green pepper or onion and their sugar-like taste.
The green pepper gave the pizza flavor and color, adding a sweet note to the otherwise savory and salty pizza. It was like a break from the other flavors, a rest from the constant garlic flavor, one that is spread across the whole pizza, heavily.
The pepperoni was different, different from normal pizza in a bittersweet way. It was what most people would consider a little bit overdone, being burnt on the rim of the actual slices of pepperoni, but it was still juicy and made the texture all that more complex.
The restaurant is tiny, with wood furniture everywhere. The floor, walls, tables, and ceiling are all wood, creating a sense of age and originality. There is a little slot into the actual kitchen, where employees take orders and cook the pizzas.
No matter the time (arrived at 7:40), the space around the kitchen is full, with people filling up the restaurant at all times. Kim’s bowling trophies are displayed above a wooden shelf above the window, with pictures of her in the kitchen. They are playing Christmas music, and it has a cozy, homey vibe with the little space available to stand.
Overall, Kim’s Uncle Pizza was an enjoyable experience, and would definitely be recommended to anyone who enjoys thin-crust pizza. The only thing that might impede one’s liking to Kim’s Uncle is whether or not someone likes garlic. To rate the pizza, an overall rating of 9.2/10.
