The Trostangs gymnastics team is in full steam in preparation for their upcoming season. The 2024-2025 team consists of eight girls from DGN and DGS. The girls have high hopes for this season, as last year they placed second at state and the year prior they were state champions. Although, winning is not the only thing that matters to them.
Sophomore Edie Condon touched on the goals for Trostangs this season.
“I would say our ultimate goal is based a lot around sticking together as a team, not letting one another down and getting through all the hard stuff to have the best season we can. I think we all hope to have an extremely successful season obviously, but it really comes down to being there for everyone and being the best teammates we can for a great team,” Condon said.
DGN junior Kaelyn Landry shared similar thoughts to Condon as the relationships within the team have a direct effect on their performance.
“We have found success by sticking together through our ups and downs. We make sure we know that everyone is there to support one another. We hold ourselves and each other accountable to finish our assignments and consistently put 100% into everything,” Landry said.
The Trostangs have been in the gym working hard to ensure their success continues for this year. Due to the fact they have performed very well the past couple seasons, there is a lot of pressure to live up to the expectations they have set for themselves.
Head coach Kristyn Campos commented on how the team plans to continue their momentum into this new season.
“This season will be approached the same way as any other. There are clear expectations for the girls, we have set up season declarations to solidify our common goals and we plan to practice in a manner that builds our skills to their highest levels for each competition,” Campos said.
The sport of gymnastics comes with a lot of pressure alone, but for the Trostangs, the stakes are high this season. They have constantly been the team to beat, and have a target on their back. The best way to deal with this pressure is to focus on the gymnast’s wellbeing.
“This season we are working on mental health with the varsity team. The girls are taking time to work through the toughest part of the sport, the mental side, to help us achieve our individual and team goals,” Campos said.
Senior Genevieve Herion, is a returning beam state champion from last season. Herion is one of the leaders who encourages and pushes her teammates. She reflected on her past years on the team and leading into her final season.
“My favorite part of DGG is the dynamic between my teammates and coaches. We all have each other’s backs and we are always there for each other. The memories I’ve made on this team are ones that I’ll cherish forever,” Herion said.
Despite Condon being an underclassman, she has felt the undeniable support from the Trostangs in almost half the time.
“We never fail to make the most out of anything, and this team is honestly like a family to me. My teammates are always there for me and it’s so comforting to know I’m able to practice and compete with people I love and having coaches that let us balance the fun as well as pushing us to be better. I don’t know what I would do without any of them, and that’s honestly what makes DGG as fun as it is,” Condon said.
