Top ten quick SAT tips

  1. Get a good night’s sleep two days before the test, as well as the day before. The sleep you get two nights before is most important for the testing day.
  2. Eat a good breakfast the day of, but nothing you don’t usually eat as this may make your stomach upset when combined with nervousness.
  3. Dress in comfy layers. This way, you can be comfortable and adjust depending on whether the testing room is hot or cold.
  4. Make sure you have everything you need for the test the night before (a checklist is available at https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/taking-the-test/test-day-checklist).
  5. Do a couple of practice problems before going to bed the night before, and a couple the morning of the test.
  6. Be sure to relax and stay calm during the test.
  7. Save all questions that are framed with phrasing like ‘all of the following… except…’ to answer last. These are the most often missed questions because you must shift how you think about the correct answer.
  8. Always go with your first instinct — second-guessing an answer most often results in getting it wrong.
  9. Use the process of elimination to narrow down your answer choices.
  10. The SAT favors simple answers. A more concise, efficient answer is more often correct than a longer, more complex one.
