Many students are wary of the human brain; however, senior Cathryn Frer is obsessed with a future in neurology. Frer has wanted to be a doctor ever since she was a little girl and recently became more specific with her goals.
“I wanted to be a doctor ever since I was little… then I took AP psychology last year, and we learned all about the brain, and I thought it was really interesting,” Frer said.
As a neurologist, Frer will diagnose, treat, and manage patients with brain, spinal cord, and nervous system problems. Frer acknowledges that getting help with brain function can be scary and wants to be a kind face who can help solve their problems.
She rubs her hand through her hair and cracks a smile when talking about helping people who need it.
“If people have problems with their brain, I want to help diagnose them and get them back to normal,” Frer said.
Being a neurologist is still relatively new to Frer, but she has always had a passion for science and helping people. She went from wanting to be a doctor, to an FBI crime scene investigator, to now a neurologist. All these jobs are heavily involved with science, and she believes her love for science is what will propel her future.
“I have always liked science. I’ve taken six science classes. I think it’s always been my favorite subject in school,” Frer said.
The subject of science caused her to fidget in her seat and speed up her voice.
Everyone gets inspiration for deciding what they want to do with their lives in different ways, and in Frer’s case, it was a medical drama show. Although she knows it is not medically accurate, “Grey’s Anatomy” helped create Frer’s love of medicine.
“I always wanted to be a doctor, then I started watching shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and thought it was really cool how they did all these different things to help people, so that’s something that inspired me,” Frer said.
