DGS Football running the ball against DGN during the annual crosstown game.

DGS football drops to 4-4 this year after a stunning defeat to DGN in the annual crosstown classic game on Friday the 12th. The final score ended up being 10-0 in a game where none of the DGS football team showed up to play.

DGN dominated the game. Their opening possession lasted over ten full minutes and almost took up the entire first quarter. DGS on the other hand only had four possessions the entire game.

In a painstakingly slow game, DGS proved they can’t compete with above average teams. DGN was able to run the ball the entire game with relative success and the DGS offense failed to put any points on the board.

One positive outcome that came out of the game was the amount of support DGS received from their SuperFan section that traveled across town to support their football team. The fan section in the “away” bleachers was stupendous, cheering until the final buzzer blared. In a season where their team has underperformed, the SuperFans have shown their unwavering support.

The SuperFan’s braved the frigid cold only to watch their football team lose a must-win game. In the state of Illinois, a team must win five football games to make the playoffs. DGS now sits at 4-4, with only one more week of regular season play remaining.

The crosstown classic would have been the perfect opportunity to elevate the DGS football team into the playoffs. The Mustangs move on to face Willowbrook High School, who are currently 8-0 (5-0) in their last home game of the season. Moving forward, DGS varsity football needs to win if they have any hope at all of making the playoffs.

The game versus Willowbrook will be held on Friday, Oct. 19th starting at 7:30 p.m. in the DGS stadium. The sophomore game will be played right before it, as always, at 5:00 p.m. in the stadium. Come watch the varsity and sophomore teams in their last home game.
