Taste bud troubles

Taste bud troubles

I’ve been at DGS for three years now, going into my fourth. I came in as a freshman eager to succeed, meet new people and have the time of my life. Yet, there was one thing I entered with my freshmen year that I have sadly lost — my tastebuds.

Sure, the food in the cafeteria has gotten better over time, but it nonetheless remains lacking. I’ve been eating hot lunch for so long that I’ve begun to see food as no more than fuel to get me through the day.

There are some decent options in the cafeteria; the Mexican food and some specials are solid. However, when those are offered, the lines are so excruciatingly long that I’m either forced to wait 10 minutes in line only to have five minutes left to eat, or go to the fastest line.

Maybe I’m being a bit too harsh. By no means do I expect a five course meal crafted by the finest Italian chefs. However what I do expect is some parmesan cheese or chili flake packets to make pizza just that little bit more edible. Maybe some sauce options for the sandwiches other than mayonnaise and yellow mustard.

I appreciate the work DGS has been putting into the cafeteria, the thought really does count. But sometimes the little changes add up to make the big ones that much more powerful. Not to mention that adding some seasoning may push people to buy other options, helping ease the line length.

Will I go back to hot lunch if these are offered? Probably not–I think I’ll stick to my homemade “last resort” sandwiches featuring a delicate array of salami and cheddar. However, I do think that the rest of the students in my situation would benefit a lot from smaller upgrades.
